Celebrate Sugarcane and Rum at El Crisol

Join us in celebrating the book release of Sugarcane and Rum: The Bittersweet History of Labor and Life on the Yucatán Peninsula, with authors John Robert Gust and Jennifer P. Mathews on Saturday, April 18.

Location: El Crisol behind Exo Roast Co., 403 N. 6th Ave., 5:30 p.m.

Gust and Mathews will share stories from their research and book that examines the hidden story of sugarcane and rum production in the Yucatán Peninsula of the nineteenth century through the lens of Maya laborers, who worked under brutal conditions on small haciendas where they harvested sugarcane and produced rum.

This event is part of a new Arts & Letters Series at El Crisol, presented by the University of Arizona Press. There is no cover charge.

The event features a curated rum tasting, followed by the high-energy Latin American folk music of Tradiciones.
