Harry J. Shafer is professor emeritus at Texas A&M University and retired curator of archaeology at the Witte Museum. He received in PhD in anthropology at the University of Texas at Austin in 1973, and he has been active in archaeological research for sixty years in Texas and the Southwest. He has authored Mimbres Archaeology at the NAN Ranch Ruin, co-authored Field Methods in Archaeology, and edited Painters in Prehistory: Archaeology and Art of the Lower Pecos Canyonlands.
